Gorrondona, Dormilona, Poggerino, Damiano and Colombiere. No, this is not some ’Lorem Ipsum’ style placeholder text. It’s the name of a bunch of wines I’ve never heard of before, and they’re all available by the glass at Marrickville newcomer Where’s Nick.
I first stumbled across this breath-of-fresh-air the week of its inception, completely by accident. Since then I’ve always seemed to inadvertently end up here, unfortunately without my camera. Until today, that is.
Luckily, owner Julian Abouzeid remembered my requirements for wine to be served in anything other than a thin & fragile receptacle, and advised on a beer glass of the “Gorrondona Txakoli” ($12.50). A fantastic wine to pair with people watching on Marrickville Road.
My drinking partner ordered up a Gin & Tonic, which came served with a nice big rock of ice, a slice of dried apple, and Strangelove Light Tonic. I hope this is beginning to tell the story.
As I wait for my second glass of “I Cacciagalli” from Campania ($14.50), I take a stroll past the moat of wines that adorn the back wall. Certainly the kind of trophy cabinet that would look good in my house. I think a takeaway is in order. After all, there are still plenty of words I have to learn.
Where’s Nick finds an impressive niche in a suburb that had been crying out for some “Je ne sais quoi” for quite some time. A bold move that’s paid off in their favour. If I lived within walking distance I’d be broke.
